7 Essentials When Providing Cosmetic Procedures

The General Medical Council (GMC) today issued new guidance to aesthetic practitioners. The standards are outlined in Guidance for doctors who offer cosmetic interventions and relate to patient consultations, giving patients time to reflect and advertising responsibly.

At Derma Medical we welcome these new guidelines which are helping create a safer industry centered around the patient. We already teach these best practices to delegates on our Injectables® and Dermal Fillers training courses and these guidelines help us to enforce the importance of patient care in aesthetics.


The GMC advice states that if you are providing cosmetic procedures, you must:


Seek Your Patient’s Consent Yourself:

It is your responsibility to discuss cosmetic procedures with the patient, making sure they have the information they need to make an informed decision. You must not delegate this responsibility.

Give Patients Time For Reflection:

Ensure your patients have time to consider the information about the risks and possible outcomes, so they can decide whether to go ahead with a procedure.

Consider Your Patients’ Psychological Needs:

Consider a patient’s vulnerabilities when discussing cosmetic interventions and make sure you are satisfied that their request for the procedure is voluntary

Work Within Your Competence:

If you feel you cannot safely meet a patient’s needs then ask for advice or refer a patient to a colleague. You must recognise your own limits.

Make Sure Patients Have the Information They Want or Need:

This includes written information to support continuity of care, which explains the medicines or implants used

Take Particular Care if Considering Cosmetic Procedures for Children:

Do not perform a cosmetic intervention on a child unless you judge for yourself that they want it – even if the parent has given their consent

Market Your Services Responsibly:

Don’t use promotional tactics to encourage patients to make ill-considered decisions and make sure your advertising is clear and factual. Don’t offer cosmetic procedures as prizes.


The new standards come into effect on Wednesday 1st June for all GMC members.
