Patient After Care

Non-surgical botulinum toxin and dermal filler treatments are among the most popular cosmetic treatments for people wanting to enhance their appearance without the need for invasive surgery and long periods of recovery. With their non-permanent results, lack of down-time, and affordability, not to mention their effectiveness –  it’s no surprise that cosmetic injectable treatments have seen an exponential increase in popularity over the past decade, especially with the rise of social media and celebrities speaking candidly about the treatments they have had.

Although these treatments are minimally invasive and quick, it’s of utmost importance that you research to ensure that you choose a reputable practitioner for your treatment. Cosmetic injectable treatments are medical procedures and not something that you should enter into without doing your research. Ideally, the practitioner will be a medical professional due to the fact that they will have plenty of knowledge and experience with medical procedures, anatomy, and minimising any potential risks.

Your Appointment

At your appointment, there are a few things that your practitioner should go through with you to ensure that the treatment is suitable for you and that you are fully informed prior to the procedure.

At the consultation your non-surgical practitioner will discuss the following things with you:

  • Any relevant medical history
  • Discuss your expectations, assess your suitability for treatment and possible treatment options for you to consider
  • Explain the treatment plan and any risks and complications.
  • Post treatment advice
  • Before, (sometimes during,) and after treatment photographs

General Aftercare Post Treatment with Botulinum Toxin and Dermal Fillers

There are a few things you can do following your anti-wrinkle or dermal filler procedure to ensure the best results are obtained.

  • Avoid touching and rubbing and applying make-up to the treated areas for 4 hours
  • Avoid extreme heat/cold for up to one week post treatment
  • Abstain from alcohol and heavy exercise for 24 hours
  • Stay out of sunlight/UV radiation until redness and swelling has resolved.

After Care for Botulinum Toxin Treatment

The drug commonly known by the brand name ‘Injectables’ is a prescription muscle relaxant medicine and is used to treat a number of conditions within the body.  It contains the active substance Botulinum Toxin A. It works by partially blocking nerve impulses and the effect depends upon where it is injected. If injected into a muscle, it will reduce excessive contractions of that muscle. It can be used for the temporary improvement in the appearance of vertical lines between the eyebrows (glabella) seen at maximum frown and fan-shaped lines from the corner of the eyes (crow’s feet) at maximum smile.

Botulinum toxin treatment lasts for approximately 3 months but will vary depending on the quantity used and of course, on the individual.

Following your botulinum toxin treatment, the following items may be helpful to know:

  • You may find it helpful to apply iced gauze to the treated area
  • Treatment normally takes 2-4 days to start to take effect. 10-14 days to reach full effect
  • Do not rub, massage, or apply make-up to the treated areas for at least 4 hours after treatment

After Care for Dermal Filler Treatment

There is a wide range of injectable dermal filler products for facial lines and areas of dermal depression. Your practitioner will discuss with you the possible filler treatments to improve your areas of concern.

Dermal fillers are used to correct loss of volume, shape, contour and reduce the appearance of fine and/or deep lines. Fillers consist of hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring gel produced in the body, this is injected into the treatable area. Fillers consist of a gel, most of which contain a local anaesthetic which minimises discomfort.

Here are some items that you may find helpful to note:

  • You may find it helpful to apply iced gauze to the treated area
  • Treatment is immediate but can take up to 14 days to settle
  • Do not rub, massage, or apply make-up to the treated areas for at least 4 hours after treatment
  • Dermal fillers can last anything between 6 -18 months depending on the filler used and where it is injected

Possible Complications

Compared to surgical cosmetic procedures there are far fewer potential risks with non-surgical injectable treatments, however it is important to note that you may experience the following, these are completely normal and generally nothing to worry about:

  • Stinging/tingling/burning/bruising/swelling
  • Injection site bleeding/skin redness around treatment area

After an anti-wrinkle treatment, please wait 14 days to see the full effect of the procedure. If you are unhappy with the results after this time, it would be best to contact your practitioner with 2 photographs of the front and side of the treated area with a relaxed and contracted expression, so they can review the area and decide whether further treatment is necessary.

Although results from dermal filler treatments are immediate, it can take between 10 and 14 days to settle and for any swelling to go down. Please ensure you wait the full 14 days before contacting your practitioner with any concerns as they will need to see the final result before deciding whether further treatment is appropriate.

Of course, if you have any side-effects following your treatment aside from the items mentioned above, please do not hesitate to contact your practitioner to ensure that any urgent medical attention or treatment is given. The above list of potential side-effects is not exhaustive, and you should always contact your practitioner if you are unsure of anything following your treatment.

Important items to note

The results that are achievable with the use of anti-wrinkle and dermal filler treatments are nothing short of incredible, however it is important to note that due to the subjective nature of these treatments, it is not possible to guarantee results and there are limitations depending on your personal anatomy.

As these treatments are non-permanent, the longevity of treatment results may vary between individuals depending on how your body metabolizes the product.
