What is an Aesthetic Medicine Course?

Aesthetic Medicine Courses: The Basics

When choosing the training you’ll undertake on your career path towards cosmetic nursing, it is imperative to do the research beforehand. There are many colleges offering their own version of an aesthetic medicine course, and what you learn will differ, along with the cost and the certification obtained. You will want to position yourself as the ideal candidate amongst your peers when it comes to employment, and the knowledge gained through your studies is the best method. Investing some time beforehand will save time – and money – in the long run!

It’s Worth Investing

It’s understandable. You’ve completed your Bachelor of Nursing and all those long hours of study, not to mention clinical placements and exams where every answer could be right (but only one is) – the last thing you want is a poorly-chosen course on cosmetic nursing. You may have found one online that is cheaper than the rest or promises a certification in less time than others. Before you enter your credit card number, take a minute and really read what they’re offering. It’s your time and money, so you want to ensure the outcome is worth it. Jot down a few notes for comparison. You’re not short on choices, so shop around.

What is an RTO?

The school you eventually enrol with should be a Registered Training Organisation. This means it is approved by the Australian Skills Quality Authority, and it delivers standardised education that is recognised nationwide. The course you complete in Sydney is acknowledged in Perth, enabling you to work interstate. This education is also based on current knowledge and taught by industry experts – leaders in their fields with a wealth of knowledge and experience behind them. It guarantees the college is legitimate and you’ll end up with a certification that is more than worth the money you spent. An additional green flag is that the college is international. If they have campuses overseas, you can safely assume that their certification is recognised there, allowing you to work in those countries. If the college is an RTO with outlets in other countries, you’re on the right path.

Content Taught in an Aesthetics Medicine Course

Any college teaching cosmetic nursing subject matter should present a breakdown of the content on its website. It should be concise and comprehensive, and its advanced courses should dovetail neatly to form a logical sequence from beginner onwards. The cosmetics course teaching industry fundamentals should assume nursing knowledge but start with the basics on cosmetic injectables, such as facial anatomy and structure, injection techniques, and complications. In addition, modules on legislation appropriate to your location and business essentials should be mandatory. Industry changes due in September 2025 will mean changes to how practitioners conduct their business, and ignorance won’t be tolerated, carrying harsh penalties for non-compliance. Any cosmetic injectable education should cover this material.

Practical Components

A point that might not be as obvious to those starting out is the opportunity to practice on live models. Theoretical knowledge is essential but worthless if it’s not taught in conjunction with practising on a real client. As a student nurse, taking a blood pressure or honing your cannulation skills on an actual person is the best way to gain experience, no matter how advanced the simulation patients were on placements. Likewise, examining a live client’s facial anatomy and their landmarks for cosmetic injections is the only way to learn. Smaller classes in these modules are beneficial, too, as you have more time with the educator and fewer distractions. A safe space to ask questions and be corrected is more achievable when you’re with three or four peers, not a room full.

The End is not the End

Ongoing support is nice to have, but not all colleges provide it. If they advertise assistance even after you’re no longer a paying student, jot it down. That’s handy and incredibly worthwhile to have as a resource in the early months as a new cosmetic injector – or even after an advanced class. After all, we’re always learning!

There’s nothing like a classroom to put you in a learning frame of mind. You attend classes and take notes with your classmates, asking questions and absorbing what you can from your educators. However, there are times when you don’t want to leave the comfort of your lounge room or clinic, and for these, online training might be just what you need. A college that has this service on offer, with an abundance of lectures and videos to brush up on current knowledge, is important and pays to keep an eye out for.

It’s your Future

If you’re looking for a college to provide education on cosmetic nursing, treat it as an investment in your future. The above points are a plus for any institution and a great indication that it will be money and time well spent.
