Cosmetic Nurse Training in Australia: Accredited Pathways

There are many paths to take when one decides to reach a goal. Sometimes the path is long and winding, with many detours and obstacles. Other times it can be straightforward and purposeful. Providing the goal is reached, sometimes the journey is just as exciting – and can be educational too. Cosmetic nurse training is no different. When your goal is to become an aesthetic nurse, your journey might be uncomplicated and resolute, with the trip from point A to B being short and direct. You might, however, take many little deviations along the way and arrive at your destination slightly slower but having had different experiences, although just as fulfilled. Cosmetic nurse training can be part of the excitement. It is crucial to choose a university that both assists you in achieving your goals and satisfies the legal requirements.

Training Essentials

All courses are not created equal. To become a confident, capable and competent cosmetic nurse, certain topics are essential to know and abide by. Some can’t be taught, such as compassion and empathy when dealing with patients, or maintaining composure when clients don’t like what they’re hearing. Other elements should necessarily form part of any cosmetic injectables training. Topics such as infection prevention and control, legal requirements surrounding medications, and how to create a realistic pricing structure are fundamental. While anatomy and physiology, as well as basic pharmaceuticals, are covered in a Bachelor of Nursing, cosmetic nursing education should delve deeper into facial structure and the injectables used to achieve desired results. These drugs are Schedule 4 (S4) medications and subject to legalities, and this is also vital knowledge to cover. Using live models to teach landmarks and provide hands-on training is the hallmark of a university offering superior education.

Likewise, all universities are not created equal. A university delivering education on how to be a cosmetic nurse needs to be a registered training organisation, or RTO, approved by the Australian Skills Quality Authority, or ASQA. This means the training delivered meets a set standard and the content taught is consistent among all facilities – the training is nationally recognised, so you can practice anywhere in the country.

Under new guidelines from September 2025, practitioners must have “appropriate education, knowledge, training, competence and … experience to safely perform the cosmetic procedure”. The responsibility for these falls on the practitioner, with the minimums outlined by the National Boards relevant to the professions involved (Medical and Nursing). Claims surrounding education, training and experience must be honest and transparent.

Legal Requirements

The Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) is the peak body for cosmetic plastic surgeons in Australia and New Zealand. Together with the Australasian Society of Cosmetic and Procedural Dermatologists (ASCPD), ASAPS has created a guide to AHPRA’s new framework governing the cosmetic injectables industry in Australia, particularly their advertising and practice, coming in September 2025. Their publication is simple and easy to read, and outlines the requirements for a practitioner using S4 medications and advertising a regulated health service.

These requirements include:

  • annual registration in keeping with AHPRA requirements (such as insurance and mandatory education appropriate to the practitioner’s industry)
  • advertising and marketing (informing clients of practitioner registration and type, avoiding misleading claims about qualifications/expertise/experience, website and social media criteria with regards to advertising, and the use of certain titles)
  • facility standards (appropriateness of infection prevention and control systems, appropriate staff and equipment to manage complications and emergencies, availability of emergency equipment and protocols)
  • prescribing S4 injectables (mandatory compliance with appropriate drugs and poisons legislation for the location of practice/AHPRA standards surrounding S4 cosmetic injectables/assessing the motivation for the requested procedure, as well as the suitability including any psychological issues, such as Body Dysmorphic Disorder, that might make the client unsuitable and further refer that client to an independent practitioner and that they see them before any procedure is undertaken).

The TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) has delivered around 100 letters to practitioners who have not complied with advertising regulations, with further crackdowns on the way. Also being targeted are too-short telehealth appointments with clients for the prescription of S4 cosmetic injectables. In addition, every client must have a review before being prescribed the injectable, and this must occur at the time of the consultation with the practitioner administering the medication. Photography of the client is subject to strict regulations, as is the informed consent gained prior to the procedure.

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care has also come up with standards to support sector reforms in 2023. These don’t directly apply to cosmetic injectables, but are important to be aware of should you seek employment with a plastic surgeon or on a ward.

A cosmetic nursing course should cover any practitioner’s legal requirements so they practice safely and within legislative guidelines.
